Abstract
1,202,058. Polyethylene terephthalate. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 22 Aug., 1967 [22 Aug., 1966], No. 38573/67. Heading C3R. Polyethylene terephthalate is made by reacting ethylene glycol and a dialkyl terephthalate in the presence of an ester interchange catalyst and a polycondensation catalyst until a prepolymer having an intrinsic viscosity of 0À1 to 0À45 is obtained, solidifying and comminuting the prepolymer and carrying out solid phase polymerization, 0À05 to 2% by weight of an epoxy compound containing two or more epoxy groups or a trihydric alcohol, neither having a boiling point greater than 200‹ C., being added to the mixture at any stage before the solid phase polycondensation. The additive is preferably epoxidized soybean oil, the reaction products of epichlorohydrin with a bisphenol, a diol or a triol (e.g. glycerol) or a trihydric alcohol. The catalysts may be organic or inorganic compounds of titanium, zinc, antimony and manganese.
