Abstract

1,190,709. Selective printing; printing processes. H. G. CARLSEN, and E. CARLSEN. 4 Dec., 1968 [5 Dec., 1967; 8 Feb., 1968], No. 57669/68. Headings B6C and B6F. [Also in Division B8] Mosaic character thermo-printers.-A thermoprinting device comprises forming each character by the selective heating of bar elements 1-8 in the form of resistors by current supplied by conductors 11 consisting of film deposits on the surface of an electrically insulating base 10. There may be a mosaic of resistors in each character space in a line to be printed, or, as shown in Fig. 10, there may be a mosaic in each position, on a page or a plurality of lines. The characters in each position are built up together in that all the, say, middle elements 1 required are energized together, then all the separate top elements 2 of the mosaic are energized, then all the elements 3 &C until all characters are completely formed. Construction of print heads.-The. elements 1-8. are applied by using the methods of making printed circuits and may consist of chromium in a thickness corresponding to 100 #/square and the supply conductors 11 being of gold in a thickness corresponding to 0-5 #/ square with a width of 0À1-0À2 mm. The printing is applied to an insulating base 10 and may be protected by a wear resistant film, e.g. quartz. As shown in Fig. 11 the conductors 11 are extended by conductors 27 between insulating layers 28 to provide a spread for the attachment of wiring. Web feeding arrangements.-In the embodiment, Fig. 10, where a number of whole lines are printed simultaneously the web is fed by continuously rotating feed rollers 32, 33, the speed of which is governed by a loop indicator 34. A cylinder 29 feeds the web to and from the printing elements arranged arcuately around the cylinder in conjunction with the impression mechanism 30, 31. Pneumatically actuated impression and paper feeding mechanism.-After. a length of web 22 is fed to the printing position the impression mechanism 30, 31 is supplied with air under pressure and the web is pressed against the thermo-printing elements. After printing the air source is switched to a suction action whereupon the web 22 is drawn against the rotating cylinder 29 and feed forward the requisite number of lines. Reversed or positive type.-the web 22 may be fed behind a viewing glass (24) facing the position of an operator and the printing elements operate from behind the web. The thermosensitive coating on the paper being on the rear side causes a change of colour on the front side. The characters are thus immediately visible.
