INVNTOE United States, Patent F Application December 1'65. .1 53, Serial N b. 398,607 filaimsapriority .applicationzFrance-AugustrS, 1953 I 2 Claims. (Cl. 197-9) sation taking place among several persons, the series of signs corresponding to the words expressed by each person joining in the conversation must be differentiated from the others.
It is the chief object of this invention to provide a machine of the type broadly defined hereinabove wherein one or a plurality of members can be engaged in or disengaged from their operative position by the operator, at will, these members when operative causing identifying marks to appear on predetermined portions of the paper tape.
This invention is also concerned with a novel industrial product consisting of a paper-tape roll carrying on its side edges identifying marks visible when the tape is wound in roll form, so that the position or relative location of the corresponding passages or groups of signs can be found immediately.
According to a first form of embodiment of the invention, a device is provided having control means whereby the operator may cause a pointed member utilizing a suitable color ink or any other means of this kind to contact the paper tape of a machine of the'type indicated so as to print a line thereon as the tape is reeled ofi from a feed roll or spool; by providing a plurality of difierently colored points the operator is able to mark for identifying purposes. as many passages or groups of signs as there are combinations available between these points.
According to another form of embodiment of this invention, the machine is provided with complementary or additional type-levers adapted when released through suitable control means to be engaged in or disengaged from their operative position, and the universal bar (or equivalent member of the machine which is positively driven upon each key actuation) will automatically cause these type levers to print the type carried thereby on the paper tape when. they are in their operative position, each time the operator depresses any key in the machine.
The attached drawings forming part of this specification illustrate diagrammatically by way of example one form of embodiment of the invention. In the drawings:
Figure l is a developed view of a paper tape of the kind utilized in shorthand typewriters, showing the marks and signs printed thereon according to the teachings of this invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of a shorthand typewriter equipped according to the invention.

It will be readily seen that, by using only two marking devices, four combinations, for example those corresponding to the tape sections 3, 5, 7 and 8, can be obtained; moreover, these marks are visible on the edge of the paper tape in roll form, so that any desired portion of the different groups of signs recorded thereon can be located at a glance.
This paper-tape marking may be obtained by utilizing a shorthand typewriter of the type shown in Fig. 2 equipped with the mechanism to be described hereafter with reference to the other figures of the drawings.
This machine is of the conventional type and therefore most of its known components are not shown in order to simplify the drawings; however, and according to this invention, it includes on its right-hand and lefthand sides additional type- levers 9, 10 and actuator keys 11, 12 therefor, each key being adapted, through a singleloaded sheathed flexible cable 13, to rotate step by step a six-toothed ratchet wheel 14; a leaf spring 15, by engaging the teeth 17 of the ratchet 14, prevents the latter from rotating in the clockwise direction (Figs. 3 to 6) and urges resiliently the ratchet 14 into one of the six positions provided by these teetch 17; a cam member 16 retatably fast and coaxial with the ratchet 14 is formed with three projections 18 and three notches 19 cooperating with a follower 20 fast with the additional type- lever 9, 10 and constantly urged by a suitable spring 21 against the cam member 16.
, The follower 20 engages a notch formed for this purpose in the universal bar 26, the edges of this notch being shaped to act through its portion 22 as a cam adapted positively to prevent the corresponding type-lever from rocking abouts its fulcrum pin 23.
When the toothed wheel 14 and cam member 16 are in such angular relationship to each other that one of the projections 18 of the cam member registers with the follower 20 of the type-lever, and the universal bar 26 is rocked to the position shown in Fig. 7, the relevant projection 18 will positively prevent the type-lever from pivoting about its fulcrum 23 and the type-lever will be held back.
However, if on the one hand the angular relationship between the toothed wheel 14 and cam member 16 is such that a notch 19 of the latter registers with the follower 20 of the type-lever and on the other hand the universal bar 26 is pivoted, the spring 21 will swing the type-lever (Fig. 8), and the portion 24 of the notch formed in the universal bar 26, which also acts as a cam member, will rotate the type-lever 9 in the clockwise direction so that the type 25 carried thereby will strike the impression roller 27 and print a mark on the edge of the paper tape.
It will be readily understood that with a device of the type described hereinabove, it will be suflicient to depress the keys 11 and/or 12 for setting the marking mechanism in operative or inoperative position and that after this mechanism has been set in its operative position the marks will be printed automatically until the mechanism is restored to its inoperative position by depressing again the relevant key, and vice-versa.
Of course, the form of embodiment described hereinabove is merely illustrative of the manner in which the invention may be carried out in practice, and many modifications may be brought thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Thus, notably, the timing of the machine may be facilitated by forming the cam portions 22 and 24 as detachable or insert members adapted to be adjustably mounted on the universal bar of the machine.
What I claim is:
1. A machine of the shorthand typewriter, calculating and like type adapted through keys and type levers to print signs or characters on a paper tape fed longitudinally, said machine having a universal bar actuated by said keys and comprising at least one additional typelever adapted to print a particular sign on a given portion of the paper tape, and means for putting said typelever in its operative condition, the said universal bar comprising a portion acting as a cam adapted to control the actuation of said additional type-lever when it is in its operative condition, each time said universal bar is swung consequent upon a depression of a key in such a manner that said additional type-lever prints said particular sign on the paper tape, in addition to the type controlled by the depressed key.
2. A machine according to claim 1, in which the means for putting the additional type-lever in its operative condition comprise a cam having at least two positions, one in which said type-lever is released and another in which said type-lever is withdrawn from the action of said universal bar.
