Abstract

1,190,516. Centrifugal separators, centrifugal filters. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 11 Nov., 1968 [13 Nov., 1967], No. 53316/68. Headings B1D and B2P. [Also in Division C1] Liquid is removed from a liquid suspension of particles of greater specific weight than that of the liquid by passing the liquid through openings 6 in the curved surface of a hollow body 1, which rotates about its own axis in the suspension, and discharging the liquid from the hollow space within the body through a line 5 coaxially connected to the body. The body may be cylindrical, slightly barrel-shaped or frusto-conical. The particles may consist of agglomerates of a very finely divided substance and a binding agent which are formed in the liquid in an annular space 7 between a housing 2 and a cylinder 3 coupled to the cylindrical body 1 and rotated therewith by means of the line 5 which is in the form of a hollow shaft. The openings may be radial or oblique, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In Fig. 3 the walls of the openings 15 are rounded and in Fig. 4, the openings 19 are formed between angularly arranged flat baffles 18. In operation, the fluid may be forced through the openings or pumped from the space within the body 1. Agglomerates entrained with the liquid towards the rotating body 1 are prevented from coming into contact therewith by the action of centrifugal force arising from the rotation imparted to the liquid by the body in its immediate vicinity. If the number of agglomerates become too large some may be carried off through a tube 9 by opening a valve 8. The agglomerating and separating device may be used for the agglomeration of carbon black or coal dust from water with the aid of a heavy oil or bitumen to form pellets or for the purification of water contaminated with oil.
