Abstract

1,190,308. Apparatus for producing corrugated board. S. & S. CORRUGATED PAPER MACHINERY CO. Inc. 22 Oct., 1968 [21 Dec., 1967], No. 50034/68. Heading B5N. An apparatus 10 for producing corrugated board comprises (a) a gluing section into which a corrugated web 13 and a backing web 14 are fed, said webs being united by starch adhesive on the crowns 13a of the corrugated layer, (b) steam chests 15, 16, 17 which remove excess moisture and which provide horizontal support for the composite web 13, 14, and (c) a pulley section 12 which comprises a lower horizontal supporting belt 18 running on idlers 31 and an upper belt 20 which is pressed downwards by idlers 41, the idlers 41 having a longitudinal spacing therebetween of 1À1-1À3 times their diameter. There are between 28 and 50 idlers 41 which are 80-105 inches long and 1¢-3 inches in diameter and are suitably constructed of steel. The belts 18, 20 are driven by a motor 23 through bevel 24 and gears 25, 26 to drive the rolls 27, 28. The upper flight of belt 18 extends between the drive roll 27 and an idler 29 and is supported by idlers 31, and the lower flight passes over idlers 32, 33. The lower flight of the belt 20 extends from an idler 35 at the infeed end to the roll 28 at the outfeed end and the upper flight is guided by idlers 36, 37, 38, 39, the latter two of which are connected to an hydraulic tensioning means 19. The idlers 31, 41 are provided with recesses containing bearings 51, 61 and are mounted on shafts 52, 62. The shaft 52 is attached to a frame member 53 and the shaft 62 is attached to a bracket 63, the end portions of which 63d, 63b extend into vertically-elongated recesses in upward extensions 53a, 53b of the frame 53.
