Abstract

1,189,682. Organic " onium " amalgams. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 Jan., 1968, No. 476/68. Divided out of 1,189,681. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C7] " Onium " amalgams, which are amalgams of the quaternary ammonium radical R 4 N<SP>+</SP>, the quaternary phosphonium radical R 4 P<SP>+</SP> or the ternary sulphonium radical R 3 S<SP>+</SP>, where R is an organic group, may be prepared by reducing a solution of the corresponding " onium " salt at a mercury surface in a substantially inert polar aprotic medium. The radicals R are preferably alkyl radicals, or " onium " amalgams may be prepared from " onium " salts having two or more atoms of the non-metallic element linked by a difunctional hydrocarbon group. Anions which may be incorporated in the " onium " salt starting material include p-toluene sulphonate, tetrafluoroborate, C1-, Br-, I- and bicarbonate, and the reduction is preferably effected in the absence of air at - 30‹ to +10‹ C. either by electrolysis at a mercury cathode or by reaction with an alkali metal amalgam.
