Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A converter steelmaking plant has a furnace aisle and a teeming aisle on each side of and substantially parallel to the furance aisle, while two or more converters may each be movably mounted on an individual track disposed transversely of the furnace and teeming aisles. As illustrated, furnace aisle 21 is bounded on one side by hot metal and teeming aisle 25, and on the other by scrap charging and teeming aisle 32, while three converters 40 tiltably mounted on carriages 41 are movable along tracks 39. In operation, the converter is first moved towards the hot metal bay and is charged from torpedo car 81 by transfer ladle 84; it is then moved towards the aisle 32 to receive a charge of scrap from bucket 64. Upon return to a central position blowing is effected with if necessary the addition of coolant scrap. The converter is then tapped into ladle 73 on carriage 72 running on track 71, the ladle being taken to teeming stand 78; the converter is then tilted in the opposite direction to discharge slag into a rail-mounted slag pot. Provision is made for using the converter waste gases to pre-heat the scrap charge, and for relining the converter.
