Abstract
1,188,257. Electromechanical delay lines. MULLARD Ltd. 13 May, 1969 [14 June, 1968], No. 28467/68. Heading H3U. A delay line having a delay time unaffected by temperature variations comprises, Fig. 1, a delay body 1 formed by an anisotropic crystal, e.g. a single crystal of quartz, having shear mode input and output transducers 2, 3 of quartz. The wave path 4 between the transducers 2, 3 includes reflections at the crystal faces 5, 6, 7 and has portions 8 having a positive temperature coefficient of velocity for ultrasonic waves and portions 9 having a negative coefficient. The crystal is cut so that these two coefficients are equal and since the path lengths of the portions 8 and 9 are equal the delay time is temperature-independent. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the two path lengths of the portions 8 and 9 are in the ratio 6:1 and the crystal is cut so that the negative temperature coefficient of velocity of path 9 is six times the positive temperature coefficient of path 8.
