Abstract

823,846. Ultrasonic delay lines. HAMMOND, V. J. Oct. 18, 1956 [Oct. 20, 1955], No. 29954/55. Class 40 (8). In a ultrasonic delay line, incorporating a polyhydral plate of acoustic wave-transmitting material, e.g. quartz, said plate being bounded by a number of parallel walls, energy is directed from the level of an input transducer 16 after surface reflections at that level to that of an output transducer 17, which subsequently picks up the energy after surface reflections at the latter level, by a reflecting means 18. The quartz body has parallel circumferential sides 1-14, Fig. 1 (not shown). Wave energy enters the body via crystal transducer 16 on side 3 and on reaching the prism 18 on side 12, which prism has mutually perpendicular reflecting faces 19, 20, is reflected to a lower level and retraces its path to side 3 where crystal transducer 17 converts it to an output signal at the latter level. A groove 15 filled with acoustic damping material, e.g. silver paint, may be provided between the two levels when these are formed integrally, and the prism 18 may be integral with said body.
