Abstract
1,187,965. Non-contact making relays. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 18 May, 1967 [18 May, 1966], No. 22054/66. Heading H3B. [Also in Division H1] A thermal relay in printed circuit form ineludes a heating element in the form of a film and a switchable element in the form of film of material which displays over a relatively small temperature range a transition in electrical conductivity, said transition occurring without melting of said material, wherein said heating element film lies over or under said switchable film but is electrically insulated therefrom and said films are formed over a substrate of material of good thermal conductivity. An aluminium plate 1 has porous layer 2 of Sb 2 S 3 bonded by ethyl silicate on it. This layer serves to insulate electrically a film 3 of "Nichrome" (Registered Trade Mark) which forms a heating element having terminals 4 and 5. A layer 6 of alumina (which is shown as being transparent) is deposited and then a switchable element 7 of VO 2 or AgS by sputtering or evaporation, which is connected to terminals 8 and 9. The relay may be incorporated into a "two" gate, an "OR" gate, a two state device and a inequality gate (Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively not shown). The heating and the switchable elements may be formed through a mask.
