Abstract

1,258,014. Windscreen heaters. R. STEGER. 17 Nov., 1969 [19 Nov., 1968], No. 56065/69. Heading H5H. A heating device for a vehicle window comprises a network layer of electrically conducting material 2, 3 bonded to a sheet 1 of flexible transparent insulating plastics material, and having terminals 4, 5 for connection to a current source. The conducting material preferably comprises metallic particles, e.g. silver, mixed with a binder and a solvent to produce a liquid which may be printed or sprayed on to the plastics sheet 1 to form the strip conductors 2, 3; the proportions of the constituents of the liquid may be varied to obtain the required resistance for the network. The plastics material is preferably a polyester resin with a heat-resistant plastics material incorporated therein. The conductors 2 are preferably connected in parallel, as shown, but may instead be connected in series. The terminals 4, 5 may consist of press-studs; connection is made from one terminal 4 via a switch to the live terminal of the vehicle battery, and from the other terminal 5 to an earthing point on the vehicle body. The plastics sheet 1 is provided with a self-adhesive border 6 for attachment to a window. One sheet 1 may be provided with conducting networks on both sides, and may be covered with an additional plain insulating sheet, which additional sheet may also cover two or more heating devices.
