1333049 Resistance heating elements; electrically heated windows P EISLER 3 Dec 1970 [18 Dec 1969 29 Jan 1970 18 July 1970] 61864/69 4448/70 and 34971/70 Heading H5H A defrosting and demisting heating unit for attachment to windows comprises a thin flexible transparent plastics base 11 carrying a solid metal, preferably meander shaped, heating element 13 and adhesive means covering the conductors of the heating element 13 to enable the unit to be stuck directly to the inside of a window with the element 13 in heat conductive relationship with the window. The adhesive means does not cover any of the area between the conductors. The base 11, comprising a film of clear or antiglare polyester film, initially has a meander pattern of double-sided adhesive strips 12 stuck to it. The backing paper is stripped off the strips 12 and the heating element 13 which may be in wire or strip form is laid on top of the exposed sticky surface of the strips 12 to adhere to them. Copper terminal strips such as 15 are welded to the appropriate conductors of element 13 to enable two parts of the element to be energized separately in series or in parallel. The heating element 13 is covered by a further double-sided adhesive strip 12a whose backing paper is removed only when it is desired to secure the unit to the window. Press studs 19 are provided in the terminals for connection to a supply. When this unit is secured to a window, pockets of air exist between adjacent parallel conductors of the heating element 13.
