Abstract

1,244,161. Transparent electric resistance heating units. DESMO Ltd. 23 Aug., 1968 [26 May, 1967; 24 May, 1968], Nos. 24505/67 and 24793/68. Heading H5H. A transparent heating unit for a window, mirror &c. comprises a transparent flexible sheet 1, a flexible resistance element(s) 4 supported in a pattern on the surface of the sheet 1, and means for attaching the sheet 1 to a window &c. with the element(s) 4 adjacent the window &c. As shown, the wire 4 is held in contact with terminal strips 5 by being sandwiched at each of its opposite edges between an adhesive support strip 3 and an adhesive foam tape 6 by which the unit is secured to the window &c. The sheet 1 is held between the adhesive support strips 3 and flexible support strips 2. In (Figs. 3 and 4) not shown, the inner tape 6 may be slotted to locate a continuous element in a meander pattern. The inner tape may alternatively be a flexible material which by exclusion of air adheres to a window &c. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the sheet 1 has a row of holes along opposite edges through which the end loops of a resistance wire wound on one side in a meander pattern extend. Wires or cords pass through the loops to hold the resistance element in place and the sheet 1 is secured to a window by adhesive strips along its edges. In another embodiment the element(s) 4 is located by cuts along the edges of the transparent sheet 1 which is sandwiched between adhesive strips at its edges. In a further embodiment the resistance elements are in the form of conductive strips coated with adhesive on one face by which they are attached to transparent sheet 1. The elements may have a heat-activated adhesive. In a further arrangement the element(s) is applied to the sheet by spraying or painting it through a stencil. Certain areas of the unit may have additional wires, closer spaced or reduced cross-sectional area wires to provide a hotter zone.
