Abstract

1418812 Heated windscreen SIERRACIN CORP 12 Oct 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 47729/73 Heading H5H To avoid breakage during handling, a thermal switch 28 controlling a heated windscreen is mounted in thermal contact with a power supply lead 17 (e.g. a bus-bar) at a position beyond the edge of the windscreen. As shown, the heated screen comprises a carrier film 24 of polyethylene terephthalate to which a transparent resistive film is applied, sandwiched between a pair of polyvinyl butyral interlayers 23 which are bonded to external glass sheets 22. The film conductor is divided into two halves by a vertical scribe line (Fig. 1, not shown) and is supplied from two phases of a three phase alternator (the third phase supplying the rear window) by three bus-bars, two of which extend in contact with both halves of the conductor and the other of which extends over half of the conductor. The three bus-bars have leads 11, 17 and 14 separated by scribe lines by which they are connected to alternator 27. One of them preferably has an increased resistance section formed as shown by reducing its cross-sectional area at 32; or by inserting a high resistivity material, e.g. nichrome, chromel or Inconel, in the copper bus lead so that the heat dissipation in that section of the lead approximates to that in the windscreen. The thermal switch 28, which is mounted in thermal contact with this section thus senses the same temperature as in the screen. Alternatively by utilizing the known relative power dissipation characteristics of the bus lead 17 and the heated screen, the operating temperature of the switch 28 may be set to take account of the temperature difference between bus lead 17 and screen. Where the thermal environment of the screen and bus lead 17 differ a heat sink may be mounted on the thermal switch or adjacent the lead 17 to equalize the thermal environment. The important feature, namely that the thermal switch lies outside the edge of the screen is achieved by providing the bus lead connecting portions in a tab 12 which comprises a pair of flexible plastics sheets 26 sandwiching the projecting bus leads 11, 17 and 14 and extending between the interlayers 23 to the edge of carrier 24.
