Abstract
1,187,950. Luminescent materials and uses thereof. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 28 March, 1969 [16 April, 1968; 18 Feb., 1969], No. 16327/69. Heading C4S. Europium activated yttrium oxide phosphor is prepared by mixing europium and yttrium oxides in the molar ratio desired in the phosphor (e.g. 93.7 : 6-3), adding at least one of ZaCi 2 or NH 4 Cl as flux in amount such the chlorine constitutes at least 1% e.g. (5or 10 %) of the europium and yttrium oxides, and firing the mixture at 1150‹ to 1400‹ C. for example, in a covered silica crucible in an atmosphere comprising oxygen, e.g. air. The phosphor may be washed in a 0 normal HC1 solution. Excitation by 2540 A radiation and inclusion in c.r.t.'s and fluorescent lamps is instanced.
