Abstract

1,187,859. Washing machines. BAKER PERKINS JAXONS Ltd. 9 Aug., 1968 [25 Aug., 1967], No. 39152/67. Heading D1A. A washing-machine comprises an elongated perforated drum 13 rotatable about a substantially horizontal axis with its lower part immersed in a trough 10 of washing liquid and divided transversely into compartments and longitudinally so that the compartments have a portion of smaller radius and having lifters 23, 24 in the compartments to lift the laundry out of and drop it back into the liquid as the drum rotates. Drum 13 has tracks 15 which engage rollers 16 and is driven through a chain drive by an electric motor Imperforate annular members 19 and plates 20, 21 divide drum 13 into six compartments I-VI. I-V corresponding to sections 10 1 , 10 2 , 10 3 , 10 4 and 10 5 of the trough 10. Water is sprayed from nozzle 33 into compartment VI and then passes over a weir 50 and successive weirs 12 from right to left, Fig. 1, to section 10 2 and drain 34. Liquid is pumped from section 10 4 to a spray nozzle 37 directed into clothing feed hopper 26 and is collected in compartment 10, also connected to drain 34. Soap, soda, bleach, steam and rinsing water are supplied through lines 38, 39, 41, 42, 49. Clothing is fed to hopper 26 by conveyer 25 and when rinsed it passes through the exit 29 assisted by lifters 32 onto conveyer 30. When a run is completed, lifting cylinder 44 tips the drum to ensure that it empties completely.
