Abstract

1,009,182. Washing machines. E. SULZMAN. May 3, 1963 [Jan. 5, 1963], No. 17506/63. Heading D1A. A tubular double drum washing machine comprises a perforated inner drum 12 which is rotated on a series of bearing rails 13 arranged between it and an outer drum 10. These rails, which extend wholly or partly around the inner drum and may be fixed thereto or to the outer drum or may be loose and located longitudinally, form a series of separate compartments for the washing liquid between the two drums. The drums are adjustably inclined so that washing fed by a conveyer belt 26 into a hopper 25 at a charging end 17 passes through the inner drum and through successive washing regions to a discharge end 18 where it may be removed by a conveyer belt 38. Baffles 40 are provided along the inner drum to further define the washing regions and fresh water is introduced at 44a near the discharge end and the dirty water overflows at 31 near the charging end so that a centre-flow action is obtained. Soap bleaching agents, alkali and heat are supplied at different points 44b-e and a soaking or pre-washing is effected in the first region at the charging end for which rinsing water discharged with the washing at 44 is used which is then discharged at 32. The charging of the washing may be assisted by water supplied to the hopper 25 by a pump 27 from the soaking or pre-washing region. Disinfectant may be added during this first operation. A baffle plate 41 is provided at the discharge end and extending below the water surface to prevent the discharge of steam and a syphon like charging hopper may be provided for the same purpose.
