Abstract

118,777. Merz & McLellan, Michie, A. C., and Weeks, E. G. July 6, 1917. Power-generating systems. - Coal is destructively distilled by superheated steam and the resulting products of distillation condensed and cleansed, the gas being used in an internal-combustion engine, and the coke from the distilling-retort being passed directly to a gas-producer, or being in part passed directly to a boiler which generates steam for power purposes. The producer is supplied with a steam blast heated by the exhaust of 'the internalcombustion engine, the blast for the distilling-retort being superheated by gas supplied from the retort or producer. The cooling- water from the engine may be used to condense the first distillates from the retort gas, and this water is then used as feed-water for the boiler which supplies the blasts. As shown, a conical retort A, lagged with magnesia A<4>, and kieselguhr A<3>, is fed with coal from a hopper A<1>, and with superheated steam from a pipe F<1>. A discharging-device A<2> feeds the coke continuously to a producer B, or in parts to a boiler which generates steam to be utilized as desired for power purposes. The gas from the producer B passes by a pipe B<3> to a stripping- device C, and thence the gas passes to an internal-combustion engine D. The exhaust gases from the engine D pass by a pipe D<1> to a boiler E, and the steam thus generated passes direct to the producer B and through a superheater F to the retort A. The engine D is cooled by water supplied by a pump L<1> and pipe K, and from the water jacket the warmed water passes through a condenser H, in which the first distillates from the retort gas are collected, and thence this feedwater passes through an economizer E<1> to the boiler E. The gas passes from the condenser H to a second condenser J, which is cooled by water tapped off the main K, the condenser J also delivering its distillates to the same well M as the condensed H. The unconcensed gas passes to the stripping-device C, and thence to the engine D. The gas for the superheater F is tapped off the pipe C<1>, or may be supplied either from the producer gas or retort gas.
