Abstract

1,187,653. Agitating and aerating liquids. H. ROENNEKE. 31 March, 1967 [31 March, 1966], No. 14786/67. Heading B1L. [Also in Divisions Cl and C5] A process for separating the phases of an emulsion comprises the steps of introducing into the emulsion a gas or vapour in the form of bubbles so that the bubbles rise through the emulsion at least substantially in a turbulent flow, adjusting the rate of flow of the gas or vapour in a plurality of vertically extending and horizontally distinct zones of the emulsion in such a manner that the said rate of flow varies in substantially discrete steps from one zone of the emulsion to an adjacent zone, until the disperse phase of the emulsion together with any solids present is at least substantially separated from the continuous phase of the emulsion. The gas may be introduced under pressure from outside or may be generated within the emulsion by heating, lowering of pressure, or chemical or electrochemical action. The process is particularly applicable to separating emulsions of mineral oil in water such as oilfield waste water.
