Abstract
1334248 Separation of solids of different densities BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORP 7 Dec 1970 [4 Feb 1970] 58055/70 Heading B2H Objects are separated according to density by placing the objects in a fluid contained in a vessel, the density of the fluid being such that the objects take up substantially the same horizontal level in the vessel, and changing the effective density of a portion of the fluid to a value intermediate the densities of the objects to effect in said portion the separation between said objects based upon the buoyancy of the respective objects. The fluid may be a liquid (examples of which are given) or a gas and may have its effective density varied by one of a number of means including temperature and/or pressure variations, addition of chemicals soluble in the fluid, dilution with a lighter or heavier fluid, injection of immiscible fluids into the fluid, electrolysis &c. Numerous examples of the types of objects that may be separated are given. In one example of apparatus used for separating various types of refuse materials, a tank 32 containing water has a heavy material settling zone 42, an air-water mixture zone 46 in which air, introduced through an air bubble generator 34 is mixed with the water to reduce its effective density, and a quiescent zone 51. The bubble generator may have a porous structure made of a sintered material such as a fritted glass disc or a sintered stainless steel or copper plate. The refuse materials are introduced into the tank through a feeder 44. The heavy material sinks into the zone 42 and is removed by a conveyor 43. The lighter materials 47 which float on the water are transported by the flow of water provided by water inlet 39 to the zone 46. In zone 46 material leaving a specific gravity less than that of the air-water mixture remains afloat and is removed by a conveyor 50. Material 49 having a greater specific gravity sinks to a certain extent in the air-water mixture and is transported by the flow of water to the quiescent zone 51 where it regains positive buoyancy, rises to the surface of the water and is discharged over a weir 53 on to a screen 54 where the water is drained and returned to the tank through the inlet 32. More than one air-water mixture zone having various ratios of air to water in the mixture may be used to provide a more complete split of the materials according to density. A simple form of apparatus without a heavy material settling zone is described.
