An umbrella-type clothes airer comprises lines, formed as closed loops, supported by arms 22 which are connected by tie-rods 25 to a collar 23, fixed to a post 10, and which are pivoted to a collar 20 slidable on the post 10 to extend or collapse the arms, the collar 20 being secured at a selected distance from the collar 23, by engagement of a roller 33 in one of a series of recesses 32 in a locking bar 30 pivoted on the fixed collar 23. The roller 33 is mounted on the pivot pin of an arm 22 and the bar 30 on the pivot pin of the corresponding tie-rod within a slot 24a in a lug 24. In a modification, shown in Figs 4 and 5, initial tautness of the lines is increased by sliding the bar 30 upwards in the slot 24a, to lift the collar 20 up the post, by raising a manuallyoperated lever 50 pivoted on a bolt 49 between the bar 30 and a carrier bar 41 depending from the pivot pin 28. The lever has a cam surface 50 in rolling engagement with a roller 42, mounted on a bolt 43 sliding in a slot in the bar 41 and engaged in an opening in the bar 30. A notch 55 forms a stop limiting the upward movement. The lines are collapsed to a storage position by moving the lever 50 downwards so that tension in the lines is relaxed to allow disengagement of the roller 33 from the recess 32 and descent of the collar 20. The post is coupled in a ground socket as disclosed in Specification 1,187,604.
