A method of separating iron ore from a gravel-iron ore mixture comprises feeding the mixture in association with water to a jig 5 having a screen 7 supporting a layer 6 of loose shot, causing water to pulsate through the screen in a manner to lift the shot and permit the heavier iron ore to pass through the screen where it is collected and passed by a conveyer 15 to a further separation point 16 where it is suspended in a medium comprising a liquid or suspension having a specific gravity between that of the gravel and the iron ore, the gravel and iron ore being obtained as float and sink constituents respectively.
