Abstract

1,186,815. Feeding webs. HERMANN BERSTORFF MASCHINENBAU G.m.b.H. 29 July, 1968 [2 Aug., 1967], No. 36174/68. Heading B8R. Apparatus for winding a web 1 on to cores 11 to form rolls comprises a continuously rotating drum 3 over which the web is fed, and levers 8 coaxial with the drum carrying a spool-receiving forked-bracket 10 and a knife structure 9 for transverse cutting of the web after completion of a roll, the levers 8 being first moved from a cutting and winding-initiating position II to position III where the partly wound roll is deposited on arms 16 for completion of the winding and subsequent delivery of the wound roll, then moved back to position I to receive an adhesive-coated core from a magazine and finally returned to position II for severance of the web and initiating winding of a new roll. The levers 8 are moved anticlockwise by coupling them by an electromagnetic clutch 15, Fig. 2 (not shown), to the drum 3 and are rotated in the reverse direction by a separate hydraulic motor (7). At position II, a knife forming part of a structure 9 is moved transversely of the web by a serewed shaft and is lifted during its return movement. During the movement from position I to position II, the bracket 10 holds the core 11 spaced from the web, but when cutting is completed, one prong of the bracket 10 is moved radially inwards by an hydraulic cylinder 14 so that the adhesive-coated core engages the leading end of a new length of web and winding of a new roll is initiated. At position III, a catch 16a on the arms 16 is opened to allow the initiated roll to be deposited in the arms 16, and the roll is pressed against the drum 3 by the action of an hydraulic cylinder 19 connected to a slidable carriage 18 to which the arms 16 are pivoted. When the roll reaches a predetermined diameter, a control signal causes movement of the levers 8 as described above. At the same time, the hydraulic cylinder 19 moves the carriage 18 to the left, an hydraulic motor 17, Fig. 5 (not shown), swings the arms 16 anticlockwise, and the catch 16a is released so that the roll is discharged. As described above, the knife makes an oblique cut across the web, but a cut perpendicular to the web edges may be obtained by moving the levers 8 anticlockwise as the knife makes its stroke.
