Abstract

1,092,601. Feeding webs. SPICERS (ENGINEERING) Ltd. Dec. 17, 1964 [Dec. 18, 1963], No. 50033/63. Heading B6B. Apparatus for winding into roll form a web 1, Fig. 1, which may comprise interleaved carbon and copy webs, has means 3, Figs. 2, 3, wrapping the leading end of the web around a support core 6 mounted on a winding spindle 5, such means comprising rollers 18 rotating around the axis of the core 6 to perform the wrapping and thus initiate the winding. As shown, the device is incorporated in a machine comprising a turret 4, Fig. 1, with three winding spindles 5 to receive cores 6, the turret being intermittently rotated to position a spindle 5 with its core 6 successively at a first position A where wrapping is performed, a second position B where winding the roll is carried out, and a third position C where the completed roll is ejected and a new core 6 inserted. Each spindle 5 is separately driven by its own motor, the speed of which is controlled in known manner by rheostats and relays. Coaxial with the spindle 5 at position A is a shaft 20 having fixed thereto a member 29 carrying in cantilever fashion a spring-loaded arm 19 in which is mounted two axially-spaced freely-rotatable rollers 18. Prior to the leading end of a web being moved adjacent to the spindle C, the rollers 18, which have been stationary at a position 80 degrees anticlockwise of the position above the shaft 20 shown in Fig. 2, are moved to the latter position, whereupon the web is moved forward by normally separated rollers 46 so that its leading end is engaged between the rollers 18 and the core 6 which is being rotated by its spindle 5. The arm 19 is now rotated clockwise, Fig. 2, by the shaft 20 back to its original position so as to wrap the web end around the core 6, this wrapping being continued by the rotation of the spindle 5 until the turret rotates to carry the core 6 to position B. When a roll reaches a certain diameter at B, it operates through a pivoted arm 8 a switch 7 throwing in a one-revolution drive to a shaft 10, Fig. 4, which effects operation of a knife 37, Fig. 1, to cut the wound web 1 and actuation of the feed rollers 46 to feed the leading edge of the next part of the web to the core. A cam 11 on the shaft 10 actuates a switch 13 causing an air cylinder with a one inch stroke to move the left-hand run of a chain 23 downwardly against spring tension and to turn a gear-wheel 24 coupled by a one-way drive to a gear 21. The gear 21 rotates the shaft 20 through a gear 22 to move the arm 19 through 80 degrees as already described. Subsequently, a cam 40, Fig. 4, on the knife shaft 36 operates a twoarmed lever 15, 15<SP>1</SP> which closes a switch 16, the switch being held closed by a catch 14 actuated from a cam 12 on the shaft 10 through a linkage 43. The switch 16 causes another air cylinder of 3¢ inch stroke to operate and to move the chain 23 downwardly, thus again rotating the arm 19 clockwise but through 280 degrees so that it wraps the web end around the core and at the same time returns to its initial position.
