Abstract
1,153,633. Winding webs. CHAMBON Ltd. 13 Oct., 1966 [13 Oct., 1965], No. 43398/65. Heading B8B. A web-winding machine comprises an indexable turret 22 adapted to carry individual mandrels from a loading station to a winding station defined by a pair of driven rollers 11, 12. The web, which may be longitudinally slit is advanced to the winding station via a pair of spring loaded accumulating rollers 14, 15; further rollers 16, a web brake 17, 18, and a spring loaded roller 19 which during winding is held-up against the force of the spring by a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism 65, 66. A third driven roller 13 is carried by a fluid-cylinder dampened, parallel-movement, linkage system (Figs. 12,13), to load the web-roll 10 resting on the parallel rollers 11, 12. When the web-roll 10 has reached the required diameter, the feed rollers 11, 12, 13 cease rotating and the turret 22 is indexed through 60 degrees when a locator 20, Fig. 3, of a Geneva device rotates out of a recess 21 in the turret. In so doing, the completed web-roll is removed from the winding station and a new mandrel takes its place. During the 60 degree rotation of the turret, a stationary knife 25 fixed to the machine frame co-operates with one of the six knives 24 fixed to the turret, and severs the web. As this happens, the brake 17, 18 clamps the web, the accumulating rollers 14, 15 rotate to take-up the web still being delivered, and the pawl 66 is tripped by the turret 22 to release the roller 19. Downward movement of the roller 19 until it comes against a stop (not illustrated), draws back the leading or cut edge of the web until it lies just over the drive roller 11. With the turret indexed through 60 degrees, the drive roller 13, which started a downward descent when the wound web-roll was removed, now comes into contact with the mandrel to urge it against the rollers 11, 12. Further, a tuck-in blade 28, driven by an eccentric cam 70 via a lever 71, tucks the leading end of the web into the empty mandrel slot 30. The empty mandrel was correctly orientated to receive the tuck-in blade 28 by a cam surface which is moved into position to engage two diametrically spaced cam follower rollers (not illustrated) carried on one end of the mandrel, as the turret rotates.
