Abstract
1,186,545. Blasting. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 March, 1968 [21 April, 1967], No. 18492/67. Heading B3D. [Also in Division B6] A decorative matt surface is provided on a sheet or other article of transparent or opaque plastics material by abrasively bombarding the surface of the sheet or other article with hard solid particles carried in a liquid medium that is inert to said particles and to said plastics material, the surface of said sheet or other article having been masked so that only the unmasked areas are subjected to the abrasive action of said particles. The particles may be sand, aluminium oxide, glass beads, steel shot or silicon carbide, their size lying in the range 10-500 Ám. The liquid medium is preferably water. A slurry of the particles and liquid medium is pumped to a nozzle from which it is further accelerated by compressed air; alternatively, the slurry is pumped to the inlet eye of an impeller revolving at up to 3500 r.p.m. The plastics material may be polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene or rigid polyvinyl chloride. Masking may be effected by pressure-sensitive tapes, adhesive films, paper stencils or lacquers. A pattern may be produced on one surface of a sheet or other article and the pattern then produced on the other surface of the sheet or other article relatively displaced laterally to the first pattern.
