Abstract
118,650. Bailes, T. F. Dec. 28, 1917. Axial-flow type; cooling parts; working-fluid supply.-A turbine working with sub-atmospheric expansion comprises a number of stages 8, 7, 6, 5 supplied with air at atmospheric pressure through an inlet 15, the air being heated by fuel sprayed through a nozzle 14. The final stage of the expansion is effected in a ring of nozzles 22, the velocity then remaining in the gases being converted into pressure energy in divergent passages 18, which are cooled by air blasts supplied through passages 16, 19. A fan 20 on the turbine shaft assists in re-compressing the exhaust and facilitates starting. The air blasts may be caused by a fan or by the motion of the apparatus through the air.
