Abstract

1,186,503. Joints for tubular frame members. FINMARK Ltd. and J. W. NICHOLLS. 23 Nov., 1967 [6 Sept., 1966], No. 39754/66. Heading A4H. [Also in Division F2] A device for joining tubular frame members comprises a pair of members 8, 9 each of which consists of half a hollow cubic block 50 divided diagonally and carrying a hollow spigot 12 or 11 and a half spigot 13A or 13B. The two members are connected together by dovetails (16) formed integrally with the cubic block 50 and when so connected the two half spigots 13A, 13B form a complete spigot 13. The spigots may have a square or rectangular or L-shaped or circular section. The two spigots 11, 12 have longitudinal slots. The walls of all three spigots 11, 12, 13 are urged apart to engage the inner surfaces of the tubular frame members by wedge blocks 22 drawn into the spigots by screws 24 passed through bores 19, 20 in the block 50. An opening 28 in the hollow block 50 opposite the spigot 13 is covered by a push-on cap. The spigot 11 may be omitted (Fig. 5). The member 9 may carry a second complete spigot (31, Fig. 6). Both members 8, 9 may carry a second spigot (Fig. 9). Instead of dovetails 16 the cubic block 50 may have a pair of tapered ribs (51, 52, Fig. 14) on each of its halves held together by a block (53) having tapered grooves (55, 56). In this embodiment the spigots are L-sectioned with tapering walls and the wedge block (58) has the shape of two overlapping squares of unequal size. The sides of the large square are tapered and two sides (70, 71, Fig. 18) of the smaller square are not tapered and engage the inner sides of the tubular frame member. In a modification a block 73, Fig. 20, having tapered grooves for engaging ribs on the halves of the cubic block 50 has an outwardly extending hollow conical spigot 74. A stem 77 of a spigot (76) of nylon is threaded into the spigot 74 and has four legs which are wedged between the spigot 74 and the inner surfaces of a tubular frame member.
