Abstract

1,186,345. Rotary motors and pumps. J. T. FLITCROFT. April 25, 1967 [April 27, 1966], No. 18359/66. Heading F1F. A rotary hydraulic or pneumatic motor (or pump) comprises a rotary and non-rotary members, one located within a chamber formed within the other, one member including a vane having inlet and outlet ports and the other slidably mounting vanes which divide the chamber into a pressurized part and an unpressurized part and means whereby each part is alternately pressurized and unpressurized. As shown, a rotor 12, Fig.4 concentrically mounted within a stator 10 is formed with a vane 13 having ports 24, 27 opening into the chamber and communicating respectively with a supply of pressure fluid and exhaust. Diametrically oppositely disposed spring-loaded vanes 21a, 21b slidable in slots 22a in the stator are operably connected to the rotor by a cam and cam followers to move away from the rotor to permit passage of the vane 13. The slots 22a are connected by transfer passages 35 with the chamber. In use, pressure fluid admitted through port 24 pressurizes the space 28, and passes to the back of the vane 21b resulting in the rotor 12 rotating anti-clockwise and expelling pressure fluid from the space 29 through the port 27 to exhaust. At this stage the part 30 of the chamber is inoperative. When the vane 13 approaches the vane 21a the latter is moved away from the rotor by the cam and the vane 13 occupies the position of the vane 21a. In this position, the whole of the chamber is operative, the left half being pressurized and the right half open to exhaust. As soon as the vane 13 passes this position the spring returns the vane 21a, the vane 13 continues to rotate anticlockwise through the pressure fluid now admitted between the vane 21a and the vane 13 and the fluid previously trapped behind the vane 21b escapes into the left half of the chamber to allow a smooth even rotation of the rotor with this part of the chamber now becoming inoperative. The rotor may be driven when the device may operate as a pump. There may be more than one vane 13 and more than two vanes 21a, 21b. By providing passages 35 on either side of the vanes 21a, 21b and closing and opening them individually the device may on altering the function of the ports 24, 27 rotate in either direction. Alternatively, the rotor 12 with its vane 13 may be held stationary whilst the housing or a part thereof including the vanes 21a, 21b rotate.
