Abstract

1,186,308. Electric incandescent lamp. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 18 Nov., 1968 [18 Jan., 1968], No. 54594/68. Heading H1F. An electric incandescent lamp comprises a filament comprising stoichiometric tantalum carbide and a gaseous filling of 0À4 to 100 vol. per cent of N 2 , any additional gas filling being an inert gas. The filament may also comprise 0À05-0À5 wt. per cent of chemically bound nitrogen, or contain Ti, Th, V, Nb, Mo, W, U, Zr or Hf as additives or be a mixture of tungsten and tantalum carbides. The additives are incorporated in the filament before carbiding the filament. The nitrogen atmosphere is said to be reactive with the carbide filament in such a way as to preserve its stoichiometry. The atmosphere may also contain argon. The lamp is exemplified as a projection lamp, three examples of which have an internal reflector. In one embodiment, the reflector is dichroic to reflect visible light but transmit I.R. (Fig. 4, not shown), whilst in another the reflector is made of molybdenum and situated close to the filament so that it becomes incandescent with the filament (Fig. 5, not shown). The ends of the filament are wrapped about a tantalum rod (26) prior to carbiding and then joined to the leadins (Fig. 2, not shown). In another embodiment, the filament is supported in bifurcated arms (Fig. 3, not shown).
