Abstract
An arc discharge lamp giving a peak intensity in the region 5050-5500 Angstrom has a ceramic (e.g. poly-crystalline alumina) envelope and a filling, in addition to a starter gas, of sodium with at least two of the elements mercury, cadmium and thallium, the filling being generated from a charge containing all the filling elements, and a portion of each element remaining unvaporized. The partial pressures of each element in atmospheres at the operating temperature range of 650-1000 C. must lie within the limits, Na 10-3-0À6, Hg 0-3, T1 0-10-2, Cd 0-1À5 with the further conditions (a) Hg + Cd is 0À1-4 (b) if T1 < 10-4, Cd > 0À1 (c) if Cd < 0À1, Tl > 10-4. The starting gas is preferably Xe at 5-100 (e.g. 20) torr. but H, Ne, A, Kr may also be used. Many specific examples are given of the quaternary system (the preferred system being Na 6 x 10-3, Tl 2À2 x 10-4, Cd 0.23, Hg 0.12) and of the ternary systems Na-Tl-Hg (preferred pressures 0.01, 0.0022, 0À3) and Na-Cd-Hg (preferred pressures 0.04, 0.14, 0.10) and details are given of the charge compositions necessary to give the desired partial pressures in view of the interaction between these pressures. The lamp described has a ceramic inner envelope 12 supported in a vitreous outer envelope 2 by a framework of leads 25, 10, 30, the outer envelope containing getters 33 and an additional oxygen getter 44. Additional components of the filling may include Mg, Ba, Sr, Cu, Ag, Sc, La, Ce, Pr, Sm.
