Abstract

1,185,217. Textile dye assistant composition. R. MATALON. 5 June, 1967 [7 June, 1966; 24 March, 1967], No. 25776/67. Heading C5D. [Also in Division D1] A liquid textile dye assistant composition suitable for the level dyeing of hydrophobic fibres to deep shades at a temperature below the boiling point of the dye bath comprises (1) an anionic polar dispersant mixture of (a) a heat and acid ,stable anionic synthetic organic non-soap detergent and (b) a heat and acid unstable fatty acid soap, the weight ratio of component (a) to component (b) calculated as fatty acid being from 2:1 to 4:1; (2) a non- polar dispersant mixture of (c) a monohydric alcohol having a solubility in water of from 0-5% to 4% by weight and (d) a monohydric alcohol having a solubility in water of 6% to 10% weight, the weight ratio of component (c) to component (d) being from 2À5:1 to 3'5:1 and the weight ratio of non-polar dispersant (2) to anionic polar dispersant (1) being from 15:1 to 3'5:1; and (3) a mononuclear aromatic non- polar swelling agent for hydrophobic fibres, the weight ratio of swelling agent (3) to non- polar dispersant (2) being from 1'2:1 to 2'5:1. Optional ingredients are (4) a water-miscible alcohol in an amount of 5-10% by weight; (5) a polynuclear aromatic non-polar swelling agent for hydrophobic fibres having a lower diffusion rate in hydrophobic fibres than the mononuclear aromatic non-polar swelling agent in an amount up to 60% wt. of the non-polar swelling agent (3); (6) a polar swelling agent for hydrophobic fibres in an amount of up to 60% based on the weight of the composition. Components (3) include trichlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene, xylene, toluene, tolyl chloride and xylyl chloride. Components (5) include diphenyl, naphthalene and diphenyl methane. Components (6) include methyl salicylate, ophenylphenol, beta naphthol, p-tert butyl phenol, aniline, cresol, chlorophenol, phenol, diphenylamine, toluidine and chloraniline. A textile is cleansed in an aqueous bath with a composition comprising components (1), (2), a solvent for waxy materials and alkali e.g. soda ash, and is then dyed in the presence of the aforesaid dye assistant composition. The solvent for waxy materials may be perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, hexane and heptane. The textile may be polyester fibres, cellulose triacetate fibres, acrylic fibres and blends such as polyester-wool and polyester-cotton.
