Abstract
1,184,315. Deflecting propulsion jets. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 13 June, 1968 [7 July, 1967], No. 28135/68. Heading B7G. Jet deflecting means for a jet propulsion engine, preferably a jet-lift engine, comprises trapezoidal main flaps 11, mounted aboutan outlet nozzle by hinges 13, and corner flaps 25 universally pivotable about studs 29 (Figs. 1, 2, 4, not shown) and connected in pairs by corner hinges 26. Each flap is of double-walled structure with a a honeycomb filling 21, Fig. 5. On each corner flap is mounted an arcuate track piece 35, strengthened by gussets 36, and having both double-flanged end portions 37, 38, and track portions 39, 43 co-operating with respective rollers 41, 44 so that the main and corner flaps are held together allowing only relative sliding movement as the main flaps are deflected, through arms 15, by actuating piston and cylinder devices 17, 18. It is stated that the structural arrangement of main and corner flaps is suitable for polygonal nozzles of three or more sides.
