Abstract

1,244,141. Aircraft jet engine air intakes. MESSERSCHMITT-BOLKOW-BLOHM G.m.b.H. Jan.26, 1970 [Feb.7, 1969], No.3723/70. Heading F1G. The invention relates to the air intake of an aircraft jet propulsion engine and particularly to an auxiliary air intake for the engine comprising an opening extending through the outer surface of the engine cowling into the main air intake duct, there being a sliding door for opening and closing the opening, the sliding door moving either parallel to the axis of the main air intake duct or in an arcuate direction about that axis. The aircraft shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises two engines 11 disposed side-by-side, each engine having a main air intake duct 17 defined at its upper side by a fairing 12. An auxiliary air intake opening 16 is defined at the upper part of the main intake by the rear surface 22 of the fairing 12. An axially slidable door 18 is associated with the auxiliary air intake being shown in its retracted position within a recess 19, the auxiliary intake 16 being defined between the surface 22 and the surface 21 of the door. The door is movable by actuators 23. The door 18 is of arcuate form, Fig. 5, being mounted on rollers 24. In Fig.6 (not shown) the door is formed of four plates (25), (26), (27), (28) hingedly connected together and movable along an a arcuate path from a retracted position in which the auxiliary intake is open to a projected position in which the auxiliary intake is closed. In Fig.7 (not shown) the auxiliary intake door comprises two axially movable members (32), (33) which are movable by a common actuator 23 operating through a link (40) and rods (34), the members being received in the recesses (19), (19a) in the retracted position. In Fig.10 the auxiliary intake door comprises two members 33, 36 axially movable by an actuator 23 through links 34, the member 36 having a lip portion 37 which in the retracted position defines the downstream wall of the auxiliary air intake opening 16.
