Abstract
1,184,213. Tobacco substitute. R. G. CARROLL. 31 May, 1967 [31 May, 1966], No. 25050/67. Heading A2C. A tobacco substitute, for smoking and chewing, comprises the residuum containing protein and related nitrogen compounds, and carbohydrates, obtained by water and organic solvent extraction of leafy vegetable material, the tobacco substitute being free or substantially free of chlorophyll, carotene and xanthophyll. Suitable leaf sources include lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, collards, kohlrabi, spinach and papaya. The leaves are washed, pressed, extracted with water, optionally treated with anhydrous ammonia, hot air dried to below 5 per cent moisture content, moisturized to about 10 per cent moisture content, optionally shredded (i.e. if required for pipe of cigarette mixtures), extracted with organic solvents, dried, and toasted in that order. In the examples, the organic solvent extraction is effected by consecutive extraction with two or more mixed solvents such as hexane/acetone followed either by a saturated ethyl ether solution of citric acid, or by methanol/acqeous ammonia followed in turn by methanol/diethanolamine/pyridine. Other solvents and solvent mixtures exemplified are methanol, aqueous ammonia / sorbitol / diethanolamine, and methanol/aqueous ammonia/diethylamine/ pyridine.
