Abstract

1,184,204. Fuel supply systems. E. C. ADAMS. March 20, 1967 [March 21, 1966], No.12918/67. Heading F1B The fuel system of a motor vehicle engine capable of driving power take-off means 14 is provided with means to measure the amount of fuel used during the periods when the engine is driving the power take-off. In Fig. 1 the fuel for normal vehicle operation is supplied through pipe 26 direct to the pump 30 feeding the carburetter 28. Movement of lever 12 to activate the hydraulic power take-off means 14 admits pressure through pipe 24 to a piston valve 32 which diverts the fuel flow through a by-pass 46 containing a metering means 48. Valve 32 may alternatively be actuated when the vehicle hand-brake is applied, and may be actuated mechanically or by suction instead of pressures In Fig. 4 meters 48c, 48d, are provided in the main pipe to an injector 28d and in the section pipe 56b, 72, from the injector. During operation of the vehicle on the road, valves 38d, controlled by a vacuum connection 24c to a vacuum controlled brake or power take-off system, are set so that fuel flows directly from the tank 54b to injector 28d through pipe 70 and excess fuel from the injector returns through pipe 56b directly to the tank. When the vehicle is stationary and the brake or power-take means are in operation, valves 38d are moved by the vacuum in pipe 24c so that the fuel is fed to injector 28d through motor M and the return fuel from pipe 56b passes to the tank through a pipe 72 containing a second motor M, the fuel consumed by the engine being obtained from the difference in the meter readings.
