Abstract
1,183,716. Matte process for producing copper. NORANDA MINES Ltd. April 14, 1967 [April 28, 1966], No. 42267/69. Heading C7D. [Also in Division F4] In a continuous process for smelting and converting copper concentrates in the presence of a flux by gradual oxidation of the copper matte to produce metallic copper, the outflow of the molten product is controlled by adjusting the temperature of the copper in the tapping port so as to maintain it liquid for tapping and solid when tapping is to be stopped. A "tapping furnace" comprises a refractory lined chamber, which is brought into line with the tapping port, and contains a burner (preferably supplied with a burner flame which spirals round the chamber wall) and has an outlet for the molten copper. The floor of the tapping furnace preferably slopes downwards to facilitate the flow of molten copper. When it is desired to stop tapping the burner in the taphole furnace is turned down and a clay or metal plug inserted until the melt freezes in the taphole.
