Abstract

1,183,531. Developing electrostatic images. RANK XEROX Ltd. April 19, 1967 [April 25, 1966], No.17962/67. Heading G2H. An electrostatic image is formed on a drum 10 by charging and exposure in known manner. A roller 20 having a serrated periphery is partly immersed in a container 21 for developer 13 comprising negatively charged toner particles suspended in an insulating liquid. A meniscus 22 is maintained between the roller 20 and a web 14 fed in synchronism with the drum 10. Toner particles in the meniscus have a high turbulence due to the relative movement of drum 10 and roller 20. The negatively charged toner particles are attracted to the positively charged image areas and so deposit in image formation on the drum. The container may be connected to a negative voltage supply and the roller 20 to a positive voltage supply to increase toner concentration and reduce background.
