Packing, adjusting or compressing; draining; packing, removable casings, containers, or carriers for.-In a stuffling-box for a direct-acting pump, the packing 14 is compressed by the delivery pressure of the pump admitted by a pipe 12 to the space between two U-collars 5, 6 held apart by a spring 7. A space formed by a drainage ring 10 is connected by a pipe 13 to the suction side of the pump. The packing is contained in a casing 4 which is closed at the steam-cylinder end by a screw plug 8.
