Abstract

1,181,523 Control systems for electric discharge flash-lamps. UNITED STATES SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS Inc. 18 July, 1967, No. 33036/67. Heading H2H. Apparatus for recurrently igniting a gaseous discharge lamp 1 comprises a capacitor C<SP>1</SP> charged from a D.C. source over an inductor R 3 to a voltage which is insufficient to strike the lamp 1 and a second capacitor C 1 which is charged from a D.C. source over a resistor R 2 and the primary winding P of a transformer T, a silicon controlled rectifier R being rendered conductive recurrently by a train of pulses TP so as to discharge the capacitor C 1 through the primary winding P of transformer T, the voltage pulses which are thereby induced in the secondary winding S being of sufficient magnitude to strike the lamp 1 whereupon the capacitor C<SP>1</SP> discharges through the lamp giving a series of flashes, the circuit being provided with a junction type semi-conductor diode R<SP>1</SP> to provide isolation between the capacitors C<SP>1</SP>, C 1 . The lamp may be provided with a trigger electrode 7. The Specification contains references to the values of the rated peak currents, the voltage hold off ratings, the recurrent surge current ratings and instantaneous peak current ratings of the semi-conductor devices R, R<SP>1</SP>, all of which have a bearing on the manner in which the apparatus functions.
