Abstract

An ignition system comprises first and second terminals which in use are connected to a D. C. source, a control inductor 17 connected across the terminals in a series circuit including switch means 16 which is turned on and off in timed relationship with the engine so that when the switch means is closed energy is stored in the inductor 17, a control capacitor 21 to which the energy stored in the control inductor is transferred when the switch means opens the control capacitor being charged by the control inductor and then commencing to discharge, astorage inductor in which energy is stored when the switch means is closed and a storage capacitor to which energy stored in the storage inductor is transferred when the switch means opens the means operable by the initial discharge of the control capacitor for turning on a switch, providing a discharge path for the storage capacitor so as to produce a spark while the switch means is still open. As shown the switch 23 is a controlled rectifier. When the storage 17 inductor transfers its energy to the storage capacitor, the storage capacitor first charges and then starts to discharge at which point the voltage across the diode 22 turns the controlled rectifier on. The energy may be transferred from the storage inductor to the storage capacitor by way of a transformer the primary winding of which is constituted by the storage inductor. A second diode may be included between the capacitor and switch means, providing a charging path for the capacitor. The interrupter 15 could be a semi-conductor switch controlled by pulses from a magnetic generator operated by the engine. In a modification the transistor 16 may be replaced by the interrupter itself. The storage inductor may have a core which saturates to limit the energy stored in the inductor. Alternatively or in addition a resistor with a large positive temperature coefficient can be connected in series with the inductor 17. Other modifications are described.
