Abstract

A spark ignition system includes a gate controlled switch 19 for controlling current flow through a winding 15 and means operated by the engine for varying the gate current to cause the switch to turn on and off. Capacitor 20 (Fig. 1) is to protect the switch 19 from damage by surges of current when the selfcapacitance of the switch is not adequate. The positions of the interrupter 23 and resistor 22 may be reversed. In this case opening of the interrupter switches the switch 19 on. In Fig. 3, on closing the interrupter 23 a positive current flows to the gate to switch the switch 19 on. Upon opening the interrupter 23 the energy stored in the inductor 24 serves to switch-off the switch 19. Preferably a diode 32 is connected across the resistor 26 to prevent waste of the energy stored in the inductor 24. The interrupter could be replaced by a semiconductor switch controlled by magnetic or other means associated with the engine and the output of the circuit may be taken across inductor 15, the secondary being dispensed with. Alternatively a parallel connected output waveform could be used, Fig. 5 (not shown). Fig. 6 (not shown) is described in Specification 1,030,864.
