Abstract

1,180,972. Production of secondary fatty amines. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 10 July, 1967 [9 July, 1966], No. 31652/67. Heading C2C. Aliphatic saturated or unsaturated secondary fatty amines are prepared by hydrogenating a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid nitrile containing 8-22 C atoms and continuously passing the nitrile, at a temperature of 80- 250‹ C. and a pressure of 30-200 atmospheres, with hydrogen over a fixed-bed copper-chromium catalyst, the partial pressure of NH 3 in the hydrogen gas being maintained at 3-15% by volume. Preferred starting materials are the nitriles of caprylic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, arachidic and behemic acids, or mixtures of two or more. Thus tallow fatty acid, coconut oil acid, oleic acid and soy bean oil acid may be used. The catalyst is preferably prepared by depositing a copper compound, a chromium compound and an alkali metal compound on a silica gel carrier and is reduced in a hydrogen flow at elevated temperature before use. Examples slow the hydrogenation, under various conditions, of the nitriles of tallow and soy bean fatty acids and stearic acid.
