Abstract
948,865. Hydrogen cyanide. PURE OIL CO. Aug. 17, 1962, No. 31675/62. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C2] Hydrogen cyanide is formed when cyanogen and excess hydrogen are passed at atmospheric pressure at a gaseous hourly space velocity in the range of 500 to 600 and at a temperature of from room temperature to 300‹ C. over a catalyst which is copper chromite, 0.5% by weight rhodium on alumina, 0.6% by weight platinum on alumina, or a commercial hydrogenation catalyst. The use of an acidic medium and pressures in excess of 50 p.s.i.g. leads to the formation of ethylenediamine derivatives (see Division C2), the formation of hydrogen cyanide and paracyanogen being suppressed, except that the use of temperatures substantially above 300‹ C., for example 500‹ to 600‹ C., leads to the formation of hydrogen cyanide.
