Abstract

1,180,482. Air cushion supported waterborne vessels. R. M. STEPHENS. 5 May, 1967 [11 May, 1966], No. 20936/67. Headings B7K, B7M and B7S. A water borne vessel includes a plurality of chambers each open at its bottom and each normally containing static air, the lower edges of each chamber being below the surface of the water, and including means to permit a one-way flow of water through each chamber when the vessel is in motion without escape of the air contained in the chamber. The purpose of the air in the chambers is partly to provide some buoyancy and also to reduce surface friction. A hull or body 1 is formed at each side with pontoons the lateral walls of which extend below the water surface whereby an open bottom is formed for entry of water, a cushion of air 4 being trapped within each compartment. There are valve means, not shown, for replenishing air and for releasing it to maintain an optimum pressure. Each pontoon is subdivided longitudinally by partitions 3 formed at their lower extremities by flaps 5 and the bow is provided with a plurality of inter-engaging pivoted flaps 9 which allow water to pass rearwardly through the lower part of each chamber by deflection of flaps 5 when the vessel is in forward motion but prevent the loss of cushion air. At the stern a single flap 13 allows the egress of-water, but not air. Apparatus for discharging overlapping curtains of air may be substituted for flaps 9. Primary and secondary water ballast ducts 20, 21 may be provided. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the air chambers are provided at the sides of a displacement hull instead of being formed as spaced pontoons, and in another embodiment (Figs. 14-16, not shown) the whole undersurface of a vessel is constructed in the manner described above except that rigid transverse walls control the flow of water at the forward and aft ends and a hinged flap for each compartment operates a valve to control the admission of air to make good losses within the respective compartment.
