Abstract
1,180,466. Railway buffer stops. OLEO INTERNATIONAL HOLDINGS Ltd. 17 July, 1968 [3 Aug., 1967; 23 May, 1968], Nos. 35726/67 and 24608/68. Heading B7L. A railway buffer stop comprises a carriage 12 freely slidable on railway track rails 10, 11 (or on additional rails mounted inside or outside the track rails) and including an abutment beam 16 engageable by the buffers of a vehicle on the track rails 10, 11; a structure 13 frictionally slidable on the track rails 10, 11 (or on additional rails); and spring-and-damper means 14 mounted between the carriage 12 and the structure 13, such that small impact loads are absorbed by movement of the carriage 12 and hence compression of the means 14, while higher impact loads are absorbed by the frictional resistance of the structure 13 which is forced to move when the means 14 are fully compressed. In an embodiment, Fig. 1, the spring-and-damper means 14 are in the same plane as the beam 16 and comprise a number of units (not shown) arranged end-to-end in a tube 24, each unit comprising a plunger-andcylinder liquid damper and an air spring. The slidable structure 13 comprises rails 19a clamped together by devices 20 to engage a guide rail 21, and outriggers 22 carrying support shoes 23. The tube 24 is slidingly received in a bearing 25 on the structure 13 and a stem 26 therein is anchored at 27 to the structure 13. In another embodiment, the spring-and-damper means is keyed to the front lower cross-member of the carriage and to a low flat slidable structure 13 frictionally engaging the track rails, and the rear crossmember of the carriage rests slidably by its ends upon the structure 13. The rear end of the tube of the spring-and-damper means is slotted to accommodate the key securing the means to the structure.
