Abstract

1,180,456. Electrical insulation of heater elements. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. 24 Nov., 1967 [21 March, 1967], No. 53646/67. Heading H5H. An oxide layer of ZIRCALOY-2 (defined in the Specification) on the surface of ZIRCALOY- 2 metal is used to electrically insulate a resistive heating element, which is used for immersion heating. A tubular element 10 of ZIRCALOY-2 metal is blasted inside and outside with glass shot and then oxidized in air at 650‹ C. for a predetermined time to form an oxide layer 13 thereon of a given thickness. The layer is ground off at 17 to make connections to the heater terminals 12, 12a. The heating unit 14 is slipped inside a steel pipe 16 and oxidized further until tight therein. The deep circumferential slits 11 in element 10 increase its effective resistance. A ribbon 35, Fig. 4, of ZIRCALOY-2 metal is oxidized as above and then wound around an insulating cylinder 30 in a channel 31a thereof and brazed to terminals 38. A steel protection sleeve 47 is provided. If desired, an oxidized ZIRCALOY-2 metal tube 26a, Fig. 3, is used to protect a heating element comprising a resistance wire 22a around a helically slotted insulating cylinder 20a. The oxide layer is formed by the method of Specification 1,168,371.
