Abstract

1,180,014. Controlling pedestrian-operated vehicles. ECCLES ENG. Ltd. 28 April, 1967 [14 April, 1966], No. 16326/66. Heading B7H. A drive control unit for an industrial truck or other pedestrian controlled vehicle comprises a frame 16 having a turntable whereby the frame may be rotatably mounted on the truck body, a motor 18 for driving a steerable wheel 17, a steering handle 20 mounted on the frame, and respective micro-switches 34, 36 mounted on the frame and actuated when the handle is in respective first and second positions to cause the motor 18 to drive the wheel 17 in corresponding first and second directions, the arrangement being such that when the handle is in an intermediate position neither switch is actuated and the wheel is not driven. The handle 20 is carried by a slide member 21 slidable on shafts 22 and urged into an intermediate position by springs 23. A cam plate 31 secured to an arm 28 on the slide member 21 carries adjustable dogs 33, 35 which actuate the micro-switches 34, 36 upon displacement of the slide member in the appropriate direction and thereby energize the motor 18. A cam surface 37 on the cam plate 31 engages a roller follower 38 on the plunger 39 of an hydraulic cylinder 40 which effects under dash-pot control the closure of carbon resistance discs incorporated in the motor circuit to determine the rate of acceleration of the truck. A spring- loaded brake plate which engages a friction disc to brake the motor 18 when the handle 20 is in its intermediate position is released by a solenoid when either micro-switch 34, 36 is closed. A head 25 pivotally attached to the handle 20 carries laterally-projecting hand grips, indicator lamps which show the selected direction and speed, and a key-operated switch arranged such that the motor circuit can only be energized when the handle 20 is in its intermediate position. The motor 18 drives the wheel 17 through chain reduction gearing 19.
