Abstract

A motor vehicle steering system comprises a steering wheel operated pump 4, a control device 5 adjustable in use by pressure from the pump 4, from which fluid is directed to a steering actuator 2 and an electrically operated pump 7 powered by the vehicle battery which supplies fluid from a reservoir to the control device. The motor 8 for the pump 7 is controlled by a device 9. The system may include, on the output side of the control device 5, a system of spring- loaded non-return valves 17, 17<SP>1</SP> actuated by a reciprocating piston 18 and non-return valves 19, whereby road shocks are isolated from the pumps. Aminimum pressure may be maintained by a spring device 6<SP>1</SP>. In the system of Fig. 4, the output of pump 7 passes through a non- return valve 24 to an hydraulic accumulator 21 and to a control device 23 actuated by fluid pressure from the steering wheel-operated pump 4. The motor controller 9 may be actuated by a switch 22 in response to the pressure in accumulator 21. The pressure output from the accumulator 21 is directed from the control device 23 to the input side of the pump 4. The electric pump 7 may be brought into operation in conjunction with the vehicle ignition switch or by switches operated by the hand or foot brake or a " deadman's brake " or by operation of the travel direction change over device, or by actuation of the accelerator pedal before engaging first gear and the operating switch may include time delay means. Manual operation of the steering system is obtained when the electric pump is inoperative.
