Abstract

1,179,526. Aerials; radio signalling. SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd. 1 Feb., 1968 [3 Feb., 1967], No. 5132/68. Headings H4A and H4L. In a leaky-wave coaxial cable a plurality of slots are provided on the surface of its outer conductor which are spaced apart by a centreto-centre distance of #g/2 (#g = wavelength in the coaxial cable at the frequency used) and have mirror symmetry of each adjacent pair with respect to a plane normal to the cable axis and midway between them. The leaky-wave radiated has electric field components in circumferential directions. As described, a leaky-wave coaxial cable comprises a central conductor 1, Fig. 4a, insulation 2, and outer conductor 3, and a protective covering 4. The outer conductor 3, Fig. 4b, consists of a zig-zag shaped metal tape which is wrapped around the insulation 2, Fig. 4a, and is secured with circumferential metal binders 7 to form pairs of inclined slots 5, 6 along the cable. In a second embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) a zig-zag tape wrapped around the insulation is secured by two longitudinally extending metal tapes, which also form slots along the cable. In a third embodiment (Figs. 6a, 6b, not shown) a zig-zag tape is provided with tags extending from the pointed portions thereof which, when the tape is folded around the insulation, bridge across and form slots along the cable. In other embodiments, the slots are Z-shaped, each one of a pair facing oppositely to the other. A leaky-wave coaxial cable of the kind described may be installed parallel to a track on which a moving vehicle travels, and it propagates a vertically polarized wave which may be received by an aerial provided on said moving vehicle.
